Obi-wan is still alive. At the end of the Death Star duel, he cut a hole in the floor and escaped but put the cutout up to seal the hole so when Vader checked the cloak no one would be the wiser. He projects himself as a force ghost while hidden on Yavin 4 after escaping from death star 1.
