River Phoenix and Kurt Cobain were actually friends. They met during a Nirvana concert at Cow Palace in 1991, Keanu Reeves also attended with River. Kurt even dedicated a song to River twice on December 30th, 1993 and January 7th, 1994. Both River and Kurt were also close friends with Michael Stipe.
