At Ceresole in 1544, a French army crushed a larger Spanish and German army, highlighting the role of heavy cavalry during the pike and shot era. At the end of the battle, 3000 men surrendered to the French gendarmes to avoid falling into the hands of the French and Swiss infantry. By Victor Schnetz
