In 1399, a French force of 1200 men under Marshal Boucicaut was sent to Constantinople then besieged by the Ottomans. The French managed to achieve numerous successful sorties, but the siege was eventually lifted following the disastrous Ottoman defeat at Ankara against Timur. By Jean-Pierre Granger
