The 1899 $5 Silver Certificate is the first and only U.S. issued paper currency to feature a Native American—Chief Running Antelope (Hunkpapa Sioux). The original headdress was too tall for engravers to fit on the bill, so a Pawnee headdress was (controversially) added in it’s place.
